County final may be in doubt as storm braces to hit Mayo

Mayo’s eagerly awaited county final between Ballina and Knockmore, set to take place in MacHale Park this Sunday, may be in jeopardy as severe weather is expected to batter the county.

Forecasters are warning of strong gusts, heavy rain, and the possibility of coastal flooding that could impact the big match.

Alan O'Reilly of Carlow Weather has reported that Mayo will face strong winds this weekend, particularly along the coast. Met Éireann is expected to issue a weather warning, with the worst of the storm predicted to hit on Sunday – the very day the final is due to throw-in.

In the latest weather update, Friday is expected to bring rain and blustery conditions across the county, with strong southerly winds and the risk of coastal flooding as high spring tides continue.

However, it’s Sunday’s forecast that has many concerned, as powerful south westerly winds could disrupt plans for the final, and supporters travelling to Castlebar may face difficult conditions.

What to Expect Over the Weekend

Friday, October 18

Wet and windy conditions will spread across Mayo, with some heavy rain and thunderstorms possible.

High spring tides and strong winds will bring a risk of coastal flooding, but conditions may improve by evening, with some bright spells expected in the west. Temperatures will range from 15 to 16 degrees.

Friday Night

Rain will clear from the east overnight, leaving clear skies and light showers. Expect lows of 7 to 10 degrees, with moderate south westerly winds.

Saturday, October 19

A dry and bright day with sunny spells and scattered showers.

However, cloud cover will increase later in the day, with rain expected by evening. Temperatures will reach highs of 11 to 14 degrees.

Saturday Night

Conditions will worsen as rain spreads and winds intensify. Strong and gusty southerly winds are forecast, along with heavy downpours. Lows of 8 to 11 degrees.

Sunday, October 20

Sunday brings uncertainty, with Met Éireann warning of very strong winds, more heavy rain, and the ongoing risk of coastal flooding.

There may be a brief dry spell, but forecasters are advising caution as conditions could be severe throughout the day.

Temperatures will be between 12 and 15 degrees.
