Top club hit hard as Mayo League comes down heavy in Oscar Traynor Cup fallout
by Caoimhín Rowland
The Mayo football scene has been rocked by a seismic disciplinary decision - with Ballyheane F.C. at the centre of the storm.
The club has been hit with €1,000 fine, four key officials slapped with bans from all football-related activities, and three of their players ruled out of the next two Oscar Traynor Cup campaigns.
The fallout stems from Ballyheane’s controversial decision to withdraw three players from Mayo’s Oscar Traynor squad ahead of their recent semi-final defeat to Limerick.
That move has now been deemed a serious breach of conduct by the Mayo Football League’s Disciplinary and Control Unit (DCU), which accused the club of bringing the game into disrepute.
It’s clear that tensions had been simmering beneath the surface and the hammer has now come down hard.
From immediate effect, two officials and two members of the management team of Ballyheane will be banned from all football related activities for a period of 12 months.
The heart of the dispute involved Ballyheane’s frustration with the league’s scheduling of a Thursday night fixture, despite what they believed was a prior agreement to avoid such midweek games until May.
Their response to pull their Oscar Traynor representatives appears to have backfired, with the punishment far exceeding any short-term protest they may have hoped to make.
It is believed the process will make its way to the Connacht FA in due course.
