Rural women’s history explored at Mayo's National Museum
A unique rural women’s history project will be showcased at the National Museum of Ireland in Turlough Park on Saturday, June 28.
Heritage consultant Donna Gilligan of Scéal Heritage is delivering a talk about her research at 3 p.m. on the day and bringing along the pop-up exhibition she has developed about life for women in rural Leitrim between 1850 and 1950.
Donna researches and celebrates the experiences and contributions of rural women through the lens of the Leitrim Women Through Time project. The project celebrates and records the experiences of ordinary rural women of the recent and distant past, creating an archive of women’s history for the county.
The Rural Women’s History talk is taking place in conjunction with the exhibition Mary Anne Fanning: Remembering our Community Midwives. Donna will be sharing stories of a selection of rural midwives and nurses which she has uncovered in her research. Following the talk, there will be an opportunity to visit the Leitrim Women Through Time 1850 - 1950 pop-up exhibition.
