Vote for Mayo man in national Lollipop Person of the Year awards
MAYO man Thomas O'Brien is in the running to be named national Lollipop Person of the Year.
Lollipop man at St. Attracta's National School in Charlestown, Thomas has done the school proud by being crowned Connacht champion in an online national competition run by Tonstix. And voting is now open for national honours here.
Every morning and afternoon, come rain or shine, Thomas stands with a smile and a stop sign at the gates of the school. But Thomas isn’t just any lollipop man - he’s a past pupil of St. Attracta's National School himself, which makes his role even more special.
Thomas goes above and beyond to help all the children cross safely, always greeting them warmly and taking his job with great pride and care. With an enrolment of almost 300 children in the school, he knows every child's name, their car, their parents, aunts, uncles and childminders. Nothing and nobody goes unnoticed.
St. Attracta’s has five autism classes, with buses entering the grounds morning and afternoon, and Thomas shows incredible patience, understanding, and kindness - making sure the gate area is safe and every child feels safe, seen and supported.
Said a school spokesperson: “Our school is directly across the road from a very busy garage and shop with a large forecourt. Thomas is always crystal clear on where all of the parents are parked and sees any potential risks of traffic for the children.
“He’s more than a crossing guard - he’s a familiar face, a friend, and a much-loved part of our school community. Thank you, Thomas, for all that you do!
“His dedication, kindness, and daily commitment to keeping our children safe has earned him this well-deserved recognition. Now, let’s take it a step further - let’s help him become the national champion.”
Voting is now open - show your support and give Thomas the national title he truly deserves.
