Price of cattle averages out at €2,240 at Mayo mart
GOOD quality heifers around 450kg were making what was described as ‘unreal’ prices at Balla Mart on Saturday - up by approximately €900 a head on this time last year. But on this occasion, top quality heifers - both light and heavy - made between €5 and an odd one even €6 per kg.
Store bullocks up to 500kg were also up on last week, with the best making over €5/kg and up by €200 on last week.
The price of cattle averaged out at €2,240 this week.
Bullocks 300kg to 400kg averaged €4.71/kg, stores 400kg to 500kg averaged €4.65/kg, while heavier bullocks 500kg plus averaged €4.23/kg.
A Charolais bullock weighing 715kg was sold for €4.37/kg by a Clogher, Claremorris, farmer to a Northern factory buyer.
Bullock prices included: 370kg LMX €2,220; 405kg CHX €2,340; 590kg CHX €2,790; 690kg CHX €3,100; 715kg CHX €3,300.
Lighter store heifers 300kg to 400kg averaged €4.93/kg, heifers 400kg to 500kg averaged €4.67/kg, and those 500kg plus averaged €4.65/kg.
Heifer prices included: 295kg CHX €1,780; 375kg SAX €2,400; 485kg CHX €2,660; 595kg CHX €3,170; 600kg PTX €3,430.
A farmer from Co. Longford had a cracking year old LMX heifer weighing 510kg that made €3,080 (€6.04/kg).
The cows, as usual, were a good trade, with prices holding well.
Dry cows 500kg plus averaged €3.93/kg this week. The tops in the dry cows made €3,460 for a farmer from Claremorris.
Best in the springers was a six-year-old LMX cow with its bull calf at foot that was bought online for €6,250 from a Belmullet farmer who always has good stock.
Weanling prices were strong due to the strong demand from export buyers.
Bull weanlings 200kg to 350kg averaged €4.96/kg, while bulls 350kg to 450kg averaged €5.04/kg.
Prices in the bulls included: 255kg CHX €1,540; 350kg LMX €2,090; 435kg BBX €2,380.
