Storm Floris to bring wind and rain to Mayo over Bank Holiday weekend

Mayo is bracing for an unsettled Bank Holiday Monday as Storm Floris approaches, bringing the potential for strong winds and heavy rain across the region.

Met Éireann has warned that the storm could lead to blustery and wet conditions throughout the west and northwest, with Mayo among the counties most likely to experience significant weather impacts.

Gusts of up to 100–120 km/h are possible in some coastal and upland areas, depending on the storm’s path.

While Saturday and Sunday are expected to be largely dry and bright with some rain developing Saturday evening, conditions will deteriorate sharply on Monday. Widespread rain, strong westerly winds, and cooler temperatures (ranging from 16 to 21 degrees) are forecast throughout the day.

The storm is expected to ease later in the evening, with sunshine and scattered showers returning.

Local events and festivals taking place over the long weekend may be affected, particularly those involving temporary structures or outdoor camping. Authorities are urging organisers to remain vigilant and monitor official forecasts closely.

Travel disruption is also possible, particularly on coastal routes and higher ground. The public is advised to secure outdoor items, avoid unnecessary travel during peak wind periods, and exercise caution near exposed coastlines.

Further updates will be issued as the situation develops as MetEireann do not issue weather warnings more than 3 days in advance of a weather event.

A Status Yellow warning may be in place for Mayo by Sunday evening, with a possibility of escalated warnings depending on the storm’s intensity.

People are encouraged to follow updates from Met Éireann and Mayo County Council over the weekend.
