Mayo TD linked to Sinn Féin's presidential election bid

Mayo Sinn Féin TD Rose Conway- Walsh is being closely linked with her party's imminent presidential election bid.

According to a report in the Irish Independent, the Erris-based representative is 'among the names being mentioned' as the Sinn Féin candidate in the race.

Sinn Féin deputy leader Pearse Doherty told the RTÉ Drivetime programme yesterday the party would decide its strategy “in the next couple of weeks."

Writing in today's Irish Independent, political correspondent Mary Regan wrote: "The party may decide to support (independent candidate) Catherine Connolly, but there is a growing move to field its own candidate – with Mayo TD Rose Conway-Walsh among the names being mentioned."

It is expected the election for the next president will take place towards the end of October.
