Fond tributes to Mayo barrister Darragh McDonagh on his passing

The death of Darragh McDonagh BL, Cois Abhann, Kiltimagh, is widely mourned in the community.

A barrister by profession, he died peacefully yesterday after an illness borne with courage and dignity, in the wonderful care of the staff at St Joseph’s Ward, University Hospital Galway, surrounded by his loving family.

Darragh was a graduate of Trinity College, Dublin, and the King's Inn and he was welcomed to the Mayo legal profession at a sitting of Castlebar Circuit Court in October 2023.

Fond tributes are being paid to the deceased on social media.

One stated: "I first met Darragh at a media law conference a number of years ago and then variously through his law practice at the Bar of Ireland.

"He was a truly lovely and genuine person. He had a very friendly and engaging manner and he wore his talents and intellect lightly.

"He was someone who clearly had a very bright future ahead of him."

Another said: "So heartbreaking to hear the news of Darragh's passing. He was such a lovely young man and we all have such fond memories of him."

A further tribute said: "So many happy childhood and adult memories of Darragh.

"Such a lovely gentle and kind person , we had such fun together."

Darragh will be forever missed by his heartbroken parents John and Marie, brothers Cathal and Ronan, grandmother Mary Byrne, Cloonterrif, Knock, aunts Deirdre Kearns, Geraldine Donnellan, Nuala Wilker, Breda Hickey and Louise Byrne, uncles Ronan McDonagh, Dominick Byrne and Liam Byrne, aunts-in- law, uncles-in-law, cousins and extended family and friends.

Deepest sympathy is extended to the bereaved family on their loss.

He was predeceased by his grandparents Liam and Eileen McDonagh Kiltimagh, and Tommie Joe Byrne, Cloonterrif, Knock

Reposing in the family home at Cois Abhann, (F12 H264) Kiltimagh, on Saturday evening from 4 to 8 p.m.

The funeral cortège will leave the family home on Sunday afternoon at 12.40 p.m. to arrive at the Church of the Holy Family, Kiltimagh for Funeral Mass at 1 p.m.

Burial takes place afterwards in Kilkinure Cemetery.
