Joint operations target illegal taxi operators in Mayo

TWO joint operations have taken place in Mayo to target illegal taxi operators.

Both were conducted in Westport, before Christmas and again last weekend.

The joint operation involving several compliance officers from the National Transport Authority, members of An Garda Síochána, Social Welfare and Revenue inspectors was implemented in Westport on Friday, December 19, followed by another compliance operation in the town last Friday.

An Garda Síochána said the purpose of the operations was to 'investigate, prosecute and to eradicate the illegal provision of unlicensed services to the public by unlicensed drivers and vehicles'.

It also concentrated on the licensed operators, ensuring that they are compliant with the regulations.

The provisions of the Taxi Regulation Act 2013/2016 were enforced and resulted in the issuing of fixed payment notices to operators found to be in breach of the regulations.

Fines totalling almost €2,000 were issued to operators found in breach of the regulations.

Court prosecution files will also be prepared, and it is envisaged that prosecutions will ensue.

The operation is one of many ongoing investigations targeting illegal operators nationally.
