Call-out for Mayo County Ploughing Championships site

THE Mayo County Ploughing Championships are set to take place this year on Sunday, April 19. And the organisers have put the call out for a suitable site.

The ever-popular championships have been predominantly held in south Mayo since the competition was revived back in 1981, when it took place in Ballinafad.

This year the organisers are open to staging the event in another area of the county, but suitable land for ploughing is key. The venue would also have to be able to cater for car parking facilities.

Currently the committee are looking at two venues, one in Brickens and the other in Kilmaine. However, the inclement weather in recent weeks has hampered the decision-making process.

As well as ploughing, the competition hosts sheep dog trials, and a display of machinery, with something for all of the family on what is always a memorable event.

If you own a suitable site or know of one and are interested in hosting the event, you are asked to please contact Gerry at (087) 9679996.
