Mayo gardaí arrest novice driver travelling at 171km/h on N5

A NOVICE driver detected driving at 171km/h on the N5 in Mayo yesterday evening has been charged with dangerous driving.

A status yellow low temperature/ice warning was in place at the time.

The detection was made on the busy N5 in Charlestown.

When stopped, gardaí from the Mayo Roads Policing Unit noticed an extremely worn front tyre on the vehicle along with an expired NCT.

The vehicle was subsequently seized and the novice driver was arrested and charged with dangerous driving.

With cold weather conditions promised in the coming days, gardaí have appealed to motorists to always ensure that your vehicle is in a roadworthy condition before setting off on a journey.

Motorists are also asked to take extra care on the roads and give more time for the journey ahead.
