Significant savings as 18,000 public lights in Mayo switch to LED

THE switch to LED public lighting in Mayo will result in significant financial savings for the council.

The county has 18,000 public lights, with 13,617 already changed to LED.

The remaining 4,000 plus are on track to be substantially completed by the end of next year.

Director of services Tom Gilligan, in a presentation to councillors, said this was a 'good news story'.

Public lighting accounts for 40% of the local authority's energy use, and this would bring environmental, climate and financial benefits.

When the project is completed it is estimated that the energy saving per annum will be c. 3498MWhr – with energy cost savings of €821,000 annually.

The county is also leading the way with the development of a light pollution policy, and it will pilot dimming initiatives along the N59 working with TII and the Mayo Dark Skies team.
