The Mayo Under 16 camogie team and management celebrate an All-Ireland victory.

Mayo Young Sports Stars: Excellence in all Gaelic games disciplines

Mayo had stars in all Gaelic games disciplines last year, as reflected in The Connaught Telegraph Mayo Young Sportstars of the Year 2025 winners.

Firstly, the Mayo Under 16 camogie team brought great honour and glory to the county in April when they won the All-Ireland Under C Shield final.

In beating Louth in the final, this was without doubt a magnificent achievement by a fine team, one that is sure to spur on camogie in the county in future.

The Newport handball team enjoyed Féile success.

The handball award goes to the Newport Féile team of Sean Nevin (captain), John Irwin, Dylan Sheridan and Feidhlim Guilfoyle, who captured the national Division 2 title. It was third time lucky for this team as in 2023 they reached the Division 4 semi-final, in 2024 the Division 3 final before they finally landed a title in 2025, despite going up a division.

Victory represented an outstanding achievement for four very young sports people who never gave up the ambition to realise their dream.

Colm Enright (left) was in flying form for Castlebar Mitchels last year.

In hurling, Castlebar Mitchels have placed huge emphasis on developing young hurlers over the last number of years. This plan is now showing results at senior level, and our hurling award winner, Colm Enright, is evidence of this.

Coming up through the underage structure, Colm has blossomed into a brilliant hurler at the top level. He played a major part in Mitchels winning the Mayo Senior Shield title last year and his great exploits have been recognised at county level as he is now a member of the Mayo squad and has already lined out for the county in the National League.

On the football field, during a year when Westport claimed the Mayo LGFA senior league and championship double, there were many outstanding performers for the club – but none more so than Fionnuala McLaughlin, who delivered fantastic displays in all their championship outings, including the Mayo champions' great battle with Kilkerrin/Clonberne in the Connacht semi-final.

Finally, Darragh Beirne was outstanding for St. Colman’s College, who reached the All-Ireland Post-Primary Schools Senior A Championship (Hogan Cup) final last year, and was a standout performer for the Mayo Under 20 team. He then played a massive part in Claremorris winning the county Under 21 A title, and finished off a great year by being called into the Mayo senior squad.

All of these Gaelic games greats will be feted at The Connaught Telegraph Mayo Young Sportstars Awards gala ceremony in Breaffy House Resort on March 13. Tickets for the event are available now. For details, contact Aiden Henry on (087) 658 2141 or aiden.henry@con-telegraph.ie.
