Repair works at Mayo pier at end of summer season

REPAIR works at Roonagh Pier will be done at the end of the summer tourism season.

Consultants have reviewed the pier and are happy for it to continue as it is in the meantime.

Funding for the emergency repairs have been welcomed by Councillor Chris Maxwell, who told a municipal meeting that they need to be progressed as soon as possible.

The harbour will be piledrived, he said, asking when will they see machinery on the ground.

He pointed out the importance of the pier, with tourism a lifeline for the two islands it serves.

Councillor Maxwell was told it's hoped to have a contractor on site at the end of the summer season, so as not to prohibit the tourism season.

The works are essential, said Councillor Maxwell, and when the repairs are done he hoped it will lead to the major development of Roonagh, including a breakwater outside it.
