Concerns over destruction of trees and graffiti in new Mayo housing estate

Appeal for CCTV to be put in place immediately

Concerns have been raised over the destruction of trees and graffiti in the new section of Lios Na Circa housing estate in Castlebar.

Local councillors have been informed about the situation with an appeal 'to take action and curb this anti-social behaviour before this estate is completely destroyed.'

Councillor Michael Kilcoyne said he is greatly disappointed by the situation, stating such behaviour cannot be tolerated in the community.

In a statement, Councillor Harry Barrett said there is outrage in the town after a brand new housing estate was targeted by shocking acts of vandalism, leaving residents angry and disheartened in what should be a fresh start for many young families in Castlebar.

He stated: "Young people have sprayed paint across walls, paths and trees, and even broke a newly planted tree. Residents have been in touch with me and they are fed up with the lack of respect being shown for this fine development of new Council homes.

"Council staff are now dealing with the fallout and are struggling to remove the paint. This is costing time and public money.

"I have raised the matter with An Garda Síochána and Mayo County Council and I am urging anyone with information to come forward.

"Every incident needs to be reported so there are consequences. Where those involved are underage, parents must take responsibility.

"I am also calling for CCTV to be installed in the estate to help put a stop to this behaviour.

"This carry on is disgraceful and will not be tolerated. I will continue to push for action so that residents can feel safe and proud of where they live."
