Bilingual signage puts Mayo town's laneways and boreens on the map
NEW bilingual laneway signs are appearing around Kiltimagh town and also on local boreens and walks.
The signs, putting local heritage back on the map, have been warmly received by the local community and visitors.
Kiltimagh Tidy Towns, in an update on the project, explained how over the last few weeks, Chris Glynn, Ryan Glynn, Henry Kelly and Sean Kelly have been working to place signs on laneways throughout the town as well as on booreens and circular walks around the town.
A lot of these names on the laneways and walking routes are familiar to people from Kiltimagh but there were no signs to indicate their names for visitors to the locality.
They explained: “This project has been a labour of love for the guys and it has been a huge undertaking to seek permissions, design, assemble and mount the signs at these various locations.”
There are still a few signs to be erected and after that, weather permitting, the Tidy Towns will paint the timber mounts and adjacent signage to enhance the work already undertaken.
Mary Johnson, Aingeal Ní Mhaicín and Máirtín Ó Maicín have also had an input, with the signs being bilingual. Aingeal and Máirtín are very involved with the local GAA club and other community groups in the promotion of the Irish language in Kiltimagh, and their involvement in this initiative to highlight the language and culture has been welcomed.
