Death of gifted artist Gus Conry mourned in Mayo

THE death in Donegal of Augustine (Gus) Conry, formerly of Swinford, is being widely mourned in the east Mayo area.

A gifted artist, Gus was someone who shared his many talents with the community, from art to music and drama, and in his work as a garda.

He was a very popular figure in the Swinford area and his passing has evoked fond memories of a man who was immersed in the local community for many years.

Gus was someone who had a wealth of knowledge and he was always good company.

One online tribute recalled: “He was a wonderful character, animated, enthusiastic, so artistic and creative. He spoke his mind regardless. It was a pleasure to be in his company and to share love of music and art with him.”

Another remembered his contribution: “Like the other communities and groups where he left an indelible and positive mark, the same is true of Meelick. Back in the eighties Gus brought his gentleness and good humour to our drama group where he shared his immense skills and talents for the enjoyment and betterment of the community.”

Said another: “Great memories of a kind, thoughtful and gentle man who was very much respected as a garda here in Kiltimagh. Part of the dramatic society back in the day, acting and directing, and in later life a very cherished part of our Cill Aodain Choral Society.”

“He was such a force of life, so artistically talented, such a wonderful bass, a wealth of knowledge and a true gentleman. He shared his talents with all unconditionally. We have missed both of you from Swinford Parish choir these past few years,” another tribute stated.

Gus, of Castle Avenue, Buncrana, Donegal, was also a devoted family man, beloved husband of Betty (nee Doherty (PB)) and loving father of James, Esther and Clare.

He is deeply regretted by Betty, his children, his extended family, friends and neighbours.

Funeral Mass takes place this morning (Friday) in St. Mary's Church, Cockhill. He will be laid to rest afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.

May his gentle soul rest in peace.
