St. Joseph's Secondary School Foxford Under-15 team.

Mayo school crowned FAI Schools Minor B National Cup champions

AT a sun-drenched Jackman Park Limerik, St. Jospeh’s Secondary School Foxford defeated Coláiste Na Sceilge Caherciveen 3-1 to claim the Under-15 Boys Minor (B) National Cup title.

Backed by their loyal band of supporters, St. Joseph’s played with plenty of vim and vigour, and they took the lead after 35 minutes. A peach of a through ball from Gearoid Clarke setup Jamie Loughney and the latter finished with aplomb.

Clarke was producing a swashbuckling display and his inventiveness almost led to a second goal for the east Mayo school at the start of the new half, but Michael Ruane’s effort was inches off target.

However, on 55 minutes, the Mayo boys added a deserving second courtesy of a perfectly placed header from Ronnie Deacy, with Rory Gruddy providing the assist.

Caherciveen regrouped and they went very close to reducing the arrears, however, Aidan Fogarty’s effort was brilliantly saved by the alert Aaron Boukioud.

On 63 minutes, St. Josephs’s added a crucial third goal when Jamie Loughney once again found the back of the net.

Less than five minutes later though, the Kerry side pegged a goal back when Woytek Gwis rounded off a marvellous team move.

Nevertheless, Foxford closed out proceedings impressively and the sounding of the full-time whistle signalled joyous scenes for their players, management and supporters.
