Hotelier's death mourned in Mayo

THE death of hotelier Tony McDermott is being mourned in Mayo and Donegal.

Mr. McDermott was the owner of the Mill Park Hotel in Donegal Town and The Park Hotel in Kiltimagh.

He is being warmly remembered in tributes locally as being a true gentleman.

A tribute shared by the Mill Park Hotel and Kiltimagh Park Hotel, where daughter Claire is manager, said: “Tony dedicated himself fully to both the Mill Park Hotel and the Park Hotel, putting his heart into every single day. As owner, he was always present, working side by side with every department and never asking of anyone what he wouldn’t do himself.

“He was meticulous in everything he did. From the grounds outside to every detail in the bedrooms, nothing ever escaped his eye. He took such pride in making sure everything was perfect.

“Tony treated every member of staff like part of his own family, and because of him, both hotels became such close-knit, supportive places to work. He created an environment where everyone looked out for one another, and that sense of togetherness is something we will carry with us always.

“Even throughout his illness, Tony never gave up. His strength and determination were an inspiration to us all.

“He always had a story to share whenever you stopped to chat with him, whether it was a bit of advice, a memory, or simply something to make you smile. Those conversations are moments we will all treasure.

“What he loved most was welcoming guests. So many people were greeted by his warmth and his kindness. The same warmth extended to the many suppliers, tradesmen, and local businesses - all of whom he valued and built lasting relationships with over the years.

“Tony didn’t just manage the hotels, he created a family. We are so grateful to have been part of his.

“The Mill Park, along with everyone at the Park Hotel, will miss him more than words can say. His presence, his laughter, and his dedication will stay with us always.”

Tony was beloved husband of Bernie and much-loved father to Claire (Emmett), Ronan, Niamh (Kevin), Gavin (Bridie), and Crona, and is also mourned by his cherished grandchildren Leo, Ryan, Jamie, Oran, Liam, Conal and Aidan.

Reposing is at Gallagher's Funeral Home, Station Road, Mountcharles (F94X02N), on Saturday from 4 until 8 p.m. and on Sunday from 1 until 4 p.m. Funeral Mass on Monday, May 4, at 1 p.m. in the Church of the Sacred Heart, Mountcharles, with burial afterwards in the adjoining churchyard.

May his gentle soul rest in peace.
