Mayo club secure under-16 Connacht Cup title
Two goals from super-sub Sam Brobbey helped propel Castlebar Celtic to a 3-0 victory over Mervue United in the Under-16 Connacht Cup final, which was played at United Park, Westport.
Castlebar pinched the lead nine minutes into the first half, when James Dever set-up Kian Redmond and the latter made no mistake with a tidy finish.
Castlebar almost fashioned a second goal on 28 minutes, however, Noah Kirby’s arrowed strike failed to test the resolve of Ryan Connolly.
Mervue could have levelled matters towards the end of the first half when a chance fell to Billy Flynn, but his attempt was brilliantly saved by the alert Noah Murphy.
Sixteen minutes into the second half, a dominate Celtic could well have bolstered their lead when a well-crafted chance fell to Dever, whose thunderous drive hit the crossbar.
The game was delicately poised, however, the introduction of Sam Brobbey helped swing the pendulum in Castlebar’s favour, and he netted a second for the green and white on 73 minutes.
Shortly after, the Mayo side added the all-important insurance goal courtesy of Brobbey, much to the delight of the Castlebar supporters.
