Mayo village chosen to launch major new chapter in youth cycling in county

The village of Kilmovee and Cycling Ireland will take centre stage on Friday, June 12, as an exciting new announcement for youth cycling in Mayo is officially launched at the iconic Thatch Cottage.

Over the past number of years, Mayo has become a national leader in introducing safe cycling and fun competitive cycling opportunities to National School children through Cycle Right education programmes and the hugely successful Mayo National School Grass Cycling Championships.

What started as a simple grassroots idea has quickly developed into one of the most talked-about youth participation initiatives in Irish cycling, attracting national attention and praise — including visits from the President of Cycling Ireland and senior officials.

Now the next chapter begins.

On June 12, four official venues and dates for the 2026–2027 Mayo National School Grass Cycling Championships will be unveiled, building further momentum behind a project that has already introduced hundreds of children to cycling in a safe, inclusive and exciting environment.

In a unique twist, the children of Mayo themselves will help shape the future of the event.

Following three hugely successful school years, pupils from across the county will take part in a county-wide competition to rename the championships — with pupils from Kilmovee NS set to make the official announcement.

“The children of Mayo created this event, so it is only right that they get the opportunity to shape its future and choose its new identity.”

Celebrations on the day will begin at approximately 12.30 p.m. when pupils from 4th, 5th and 6th Class in Kilmovee NS take to their bikes for a special 2.5km community cycle through Ballinrumpa en route to the Thatch Cottage.

There they will be joined by representatives from An Garda Síochána, Cycling Ireland staff, local dignitaries and members of the community for the official announcement and presentations.

Pupils will also receive their Cycle Right Level 1 Certificates from Cycling Ireland staff in recognition of their cycling skills and road safety education.

Refreshments will be served on the day, with teas, coffees and the renowned Kilmovee hospitality awaiting all who attend.

Following the launch celebrations, the pupils will complete a further 2.5km return cycle via the Top Road, arriving back to the school at approximately 2.30pm.

The message is simple:

On your bike, Mayo — the future of youth cycling is rolling forward fast.
