Fond tributes to retired Mayo pharmacist on his passing

The death of Maurice O'Connell, Park Road, Swinford, is deeply regretted in the community at large.

A much-loved and respected personality, he established and operated a successful pharmacy in the town for many years.

"A true gentleman who served the people of Swinford so well," one tribute to him on social media stated.

"His kindness, welcome and smile will always be remembered," another said.

Maurice played a central role in the sporting scene of Swinford for much of his life, as a lovely tribute by the local GAA Club testified.

It observed: "Never a man to dwell on his many accomplishments, he was a stalwart of the club from just after the Second World War up to the modern day.

"Swinford football experienced boom times in the 1950s and Maurice and the O’Connells were at the heart of it.

"During this period, Maurice lined out with his five brothers for Swinford.

"Even though he represented Westmeath at county level, while doing his apprenticeship, Maurice was a long-suffering Mayo fan.

"The 2014 Swinford GAA Hall of Fame plaque was presented to Maurice and so well deserved.

"His proud son Eoghan received it on his behalf and has continued Maurice’s legacy with the club, on and off the field, but more so as a proud supporter and generous sponsor of jerseys, training gear and First Aid supplies in recent years.

"Swinford GAA is proud to count the O’Connell family as one of our own."

Predeceased by his parents Denis and Barbara, sister Gráinne and brother Joe, Maurice will be fondly missed by his wife Bríd (née Hughes), daughters Blánaid and Fionnuala, sons Donncha, Maurice and Eoghan, brothers James, Denis, Daniel and Adrian, sons-in-law Val and Dave, daughters-in-law Nicola and Noelle, his grandchildren Donncha, Sadhbh and Ailbhe Hanks, Síofra, Jim and Donncha Connolly, Ríain Freeman and Eily O'Connell, Clíodhna, Síun, Fia and Eoghan O'Connell, nephews, nieces, family circle and friends.

Deepest sympathy is extended to the bereaved family on their loss.

Reposing in Campbell's Funeral Home, Swinford, this evening (Wednesday) from 5 until 8 p.m.

Funeral Mass will take place at 12 noon in the Church of Our Lady Help of Christians on Thursday prior to burial in Kilconduff Cemetery.

May his gentle soul rest in peace.
