Residents up in arms over works at green area between Mayo housing estates

Concerns have been raised with elected members of Castlebar Municipal District over works taking place at a green area between new Carrabeag estate and the old Carrabeag estate at Newport Road in the town.

The location in question has been described by residents as an important access point used by children within the estate as a safe route to reach the footpath.

A letter submitted to councillors outlined: "It is a well-used safe zone for families and children, and any alteration to it raises significant safety concerns for residents.

"In addition, over the past few days machinery has been parked within our estate, causing obstruction to ongoing traffic and creating further disruption for residents.

"This is not acceptable and is causing both inconvenience and concern regarding health and safety within the estate.

"The residents are not happy with this work being carried out and we respectfully request that this matter be investigated as a priority and that the works be stopped with immediate effect until the appropriate permissions and safety considerations have been fully addressed."

The matter was raised at yesterday's meeting of the Castlebar Municpal District by Councillor Michael Kilcoyne.

He was told by officials that the issue had been examined by the council's planning enforcement department.

In a statement today, Councillor Donna Sheridan said she was inundated by complaints from residents in respect of the matter.

She has requested a map of the area that the subject of the dispute and is also seeking clarification from senior officials.
