Construction start date for Mayo village's welcome new playground

CONSTRUCTION on a new playground in Bohola will start in August.

Funding has been secured to deliver the project, Durkan Bohola Community Park (DBCP) has confirmed.

And in an extra boost for the village, funding is also in place for an access road to the community park and playground. That project will also start in August after works on the adjoining GAA field, which got underway this past week, are completed.

The playground project was initially placed in jeopardy due to inflationary increases, leaving a funding shortfall of €32,000. However, through the hard work and determination of Councillor Adrian Forkan, members of DBCP, and Mayo County Council, additional funding was secured.

The park committee thanked Councillor Forkan for his tireless efforts in securing a total of €122,000 for the project, with a significant portion coming directly from his own allocations through GMA/LPS funding.

Thanks was also extended to Peter Gill, parks superintendent with Mayo County Council, for his work throughout the design and procurement process.

And there were words of thanks too for every individual and business who contributed towards the project - DBCP successfully raised €110,000, bringing the total playground investment to €232,000.

Creative Playground Solutions have been awarded the contract, with works set to commence in August.

In respect of the access road to Durkan Bohola Community Park and playground, DBCP confirmed it has secured 75% funding (€168,613) from South Mayo Leader, with all funding now in place for this important infrastructure project.

Works on the access road are scheduled to begin in August following completion of the GAA field.

They extended thanks to South Mayo Leader for their assistance and guidance and Minister Dara Calleary and his team for securing funding under the Leader programme.

Kevin Mulderrig, local contractor, has been awarded the contract for the access road development.

It's been a good week for the community in Bohola, with works underway on the GAA pitch development this past week and funding secured to light up Micksey's Way.
