Dillon welcomes progress on Mayo nature reserve and walled garden

Minister of State Alan Dillon TD has welcomed progress on the development of Moorehall Nature Reserve and Walled Garden, with tenders being sought for Quantity Surveying Consulting Services to support the next phase of works.

He said the tender marks another important step in moving the project from planning into delivery and reflects the Council’s commitment to advancing this nationally significant site.

Minister Dillon noted that the Moorehall Masterplan sets out a clear and ambitious vision for the estate, including the restoration of Moorehall House, the revival of the historic Walled Garden, the creation of a visitor centre, and strong protections for the Lesser Horseshoe Bat, whose habitat at Moorehall is of international importance.

The plan also includes enhanced walking trails, woodland management, and wider biodiversity improvements that will link Moorehall to surrounding communities and heritage sites.

He emphasised that the project is not only about conserving heritage but also about supporting local enterprise and rural development. With strong visitor numbers already recorded, the planned improvements will help position Moorehall as a flagship destination in the West of Ireland, creating new opportunities for the region.

The tender will support Mayo County Council in progressing the design, costing, and delivery of works across the Nature Reserve and Walled Garden.

Minister Dillon said he looks forward to further progress and stressed that each step brings the community closer to realising the full potential of Moorehall as a place of heritage, nature, and local pride.
