Intoxicated man fined after fleeing gardaí in south Mayo town

A Ballindine man has fined €200 at Castlebar District Court after he was found highly intoxicated in Claremorris town centre in the early hours of the morning and fled from gardaí.

Edzus Mukans, 12 Cruach na Gréine, Ballindine, appeared before Judge Ciarán Liddy charged with a public order offence.

Court presenter Sergeant Fiona Farrell told the court that at 1.50 a.m. on September 5, 2025, gardaí encountered Mukans in a highly intoxicated state at The Square, Claremorris.

He took off running from gardaí before being apprehended and brought to the station, where he was charged.

Solicitor Catherine Tolan, defending, told the court that her client, Mukans, aged 25, was living at home and in employment. He was instructing an apology to the State for his behaviour.

Ms. Tolan said her client had been in a blackout state at the time and had since given up alcohol entirely, focusing on his work and doing so without any supports.

Judge Liddy fined Mukans €200, allowing three months to pay.
