Iconic Mayo pub to reopen its doors after 37 years this weekend

Cannons Bar on Market Square in Castlebar is set to reopen after standing closed for 37 years.

The new offering is to begin a series of soft openings this week as final preparations are completed ahead of an official opening ceremony in the coming weeks.

Owner Dave McCormack said he was "delighted" to welcome customers back to the premises, which he described as a "beautiful little gem."

He added that he could not wait to see the bar "full of life, laughter, great conversation, and perfectly poured pints once again."

The bar has seating for around 40 people, along with a small standing area.

Staff will be on the door for the first few nights to manage numbers and ensure customers have the best possible experience.

Owners have asked customers not to be disappointed if they cannot gain entry straight away while the soft opening period continues.

Opening hours

Cannons Bar will open Thursday to Saturday, with reduced hours on alternate Sundays.

Opening hours are as follows:

Thursday: 3 p.m. to 11.30 p.m.

Friday: 3 p.m. to 12.30 a.m.

Saturday: 3 p.m. to 12.30 a.m.

Every other Sunday: 3 p.m. to 11 p.m.

The bar will be closed Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, though owners said private events can be arranged on request.

In a statement on social media the owners thanked tradespeople, suppliers, family, friends and supporters who helped bring the project to completion, saying the reopening would not have been possible without their help.
