Tourmakeady edge Islandeady in Mayo league final thriller

Tourmakeady are Division 5 champions after holding off a remarkable Islandeady fightback to win 4-15 to 1-22 in a final that had everything.

Eugene Shaughnessy's early goal set Tourmakeady on their way, and they led throughout, going in at half-time 1-10 to 0-7 up thanks to a string of points from Luke Lydon and Mike Prendergast, including two-pointers from both.

Goals after the restart from Shane Staunton and Luke Lydon put Tourmakeady seemingly out of sight at 3-12 to 0-8, but Islandeady produced a stunning response.

Darragh Joyce's goal in the 49th minute kick-started a 1-8-to-nothing burst that included a two-pointer duo from Zac Collins and a freak, mishit two-pointer from substitute Andrew Gallagher that somehow bounced over the bar.

Islandeady drew level, then briefly ahead through Collins in the 57th minute.

Tourmakeady needed a big response and got one. Lydon's two-point free attempt was recovered and turned into a point to tie things up, before Prendergast, set up by James Walsh's driving run, buried his sides third goal of the game in the 63rd minute to win it.

Prendergast finished with 1-7, while Collins was the top-scorer for Islandeady with 0-10, four of those from two-point efforts. Darragh Joyce added 1-5 to his sides valiant cause.

Islandeady were left heartbroken but they fought to the bitter end while both sides will move up into Division 4 for the 2027 league campaign.
