Controlled explosion conducted at popular Mayo lake amenity after grenade discovered

A controlled explosion has been conducted by Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) personnel at Lough Lannagh in Castlebar.

A grenade, historic in nature, was discovered on the lake shore yesterday (Saturday) evening and reported to local gardaí.

The area, including the busy car park, was closed off to the public for an extended period due to the emergency.

No further information is available at this time.

Local Councillor Donna Sheridan has welcomed the fact that the incident was handled in such a swift and professional manner.
