Management plan in place to address west Mayo traffic chaos

A traffic management plan has been put in place today to address serious traffic congestion problems that occurred in Newport yesterday.

Mayo TD Keira Keogh received a commitment from representatives of Fox Buildings & Engineering Limited, the firm involved in constructing the new €31.5 million N59 Derrada to Newport road project, that personnel will be on site to help speed up traffic flows between Westport, Castlebar and Achill.

Deputy Keogh welcomed the company's commitment and said every effort should be maintained to ensure smoother traffic movement throughout the tourist season in the best interests of local residents, the hospitality and business sectors and motorists.

"The understandable concerns of the local community deserve to be given a high priority," she added.
