Alleged Mayo assault case put back to September for book of evidence

A case involving an alleged assault causing serious harm has been adjourned until September.

Davitt Neary and Rhys Neary, both of Shanvalley, Breaffy Woods, Castlebar, along with Paul Dowding of Frenchill, Castlebar, were due to be served with books of evidence at Castlebar District Court on July 15.

The case relates to an incident outside a pub on Tucker Street, Castlebar, in the early hours of Saturday, August 23, 2025.

The Nearys and Dowding face charges of Section 4 assault, causing serious harm.

A fourth man, Oran Groarke of Ballynew, Turlough Road, Castlebar, is charged with violent disorder arising from the same incident.

The Neary brothers and Groarke had no legal representation at the July 15 hearing due to the ongoing withdrawal of solicitors from criminal cases. Ms. Kathleen Henry, BL, represented Dowding but had no instructions.

The State asked that the service of the book of evidence for the four accused be adjourned until September 2.

Judge Michael Connellan remanded the accused on continuing bail.
