Death of former Mayo station manager deeply mourned

THE death has occurred of Anne Elliott, former station manager at Westport Train Station.

As well as being a welcoming figure for many people on their arrival to Westport, Anne was also synonymous with the Tidy Towns organisation in her adopted home over the years.

Anne, née Bourke, of Sheeroe, Westport, and late of Knockmoyleen, Ballyheane, died peacefully in the wonderful care of the staff in Mayo Hospice, surrounded by her loving family.

She is being remembered fondly by her work colleagues in Irish Rail and in the local community where she contributed to everyday life in a positive way.

A former work colleague on rip.ie recalled: “Anne was a pleasure to work with and a pioneering presence within our company; at the forefront of change and first in her field in many areas. Her work was philanthropic and instigated change for good.

“Her kindness and spirit will long be remembered.”

“A wonderful colleague in Iarnród Éireann, Anne set the standard for everyone around her. Always a pleasure to visit her in Westport,” said another.

Westport Tidy Towns has also paid tribute to Anne: “We are deeply saddened to hear the news of the passing of one our committee members, former vice-chairperson and a dedicated, loyal volunteer.

“Anne was committed to Tidy Towns and her love of Westport. The pride Anne had in the Westport Train Station was evident and contributed greatly to our success over the years.

“We extend our sincere sympathies to her husband Willie and her extended family at this difficult time. May she rest in peace and no doubt she will be tending to the heavenly gardens.”

Anne was predeceased by her parents Paddy and Mai and her brother John.

She is very deeply regretted by her loving and devoted husband Willie, sisters Mary King (Tony), Patricia Walsh (Tom), Breda Buckley (Aidan), Carmel Sheridan (Michael) and Evelyn Faherty (Willie), brothers Pauric and Tommy (Mary), aunt Kathleen Kelly (Kilmaine), nephews, nieces, grandnieces, grandnephews, relatives, neighbours and friends.

Anne will repose in Ballyheane Community Centre on Monday from 5 to 7 p.m.

Funeral cortege will arrive at St. Patrick’s Church, Ballyheane, on Tuesday at 12.15 p.m. for Requiem Mass at 1 p.m., followed by burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.
