Passing of John Mooney is mourned in Mayo golfing circles

The death of John Mooney, Doctors Road, Ballyhaunis, is widely mourned in the community.

A retired member of the staff of the Irish Times, he died peacefully following a short illness in the wonderful care of Mayo Hospice, surrounded by his family.

Aged 82, he is welcomed into Heaven by his beloved wife Rita (2002), brother Aiden and grandson, baby Aiden O'Brien.

John is survived by his heartbroken children Liesel, Shane and Hilary and their spouses Jason, Alma and Brian, brothers Brian and Des, brother-in-law Oliver, sisters-in-law Petua, Norrie, Myra, Bernadette, Colette and Teresa, and his adored grandchildren Rachel, Louise, Harry, Seán, Aileen, Pádraic, Elizabeth, Juliette and John Paul, nieces, nephews, neighbours and his wide circle of friends, to whom deepest sympathy is tendered.

The deceased was a former captain and president of Ballyhaunis Golf Club.

In a tribute, the club stated: "John was a huge part of our club over many years, serving as both captain and president, as well as club secretary for over 20 years.

"His dedication and contribution to the club will never be forgotten.

"John’s great wit and wonderful sense of humour kept us entertained at countless presentations over the years, creating many memories that we will cherish.

"He will be sadly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

"Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with John’s family and loved ones at this very sad time."

Reposing in his own home tomorrow (Wednesday) from 4 to 7 p.m.

Removal from his residence on Thursday for Requiem Mass at 11 a.m. in St Patrick's Church, Ballyhaunis, with interment afterwards in the local cemetery.
