Mayo FC punished for defensive mistakes in Letterkenny

Mayo FC were punished for defensive mistakes and a lack of cutting edge as Letterkenny Rovers ran out 3-0 winners in their FAI National League encounter at Leckview Park, writes John Corless.

Despite enjoying plenty of possession, Mayo failed to make it count and badly missed injured duo James McGrath and Connor McCarthy, with the latter’s composure in front of goal particularly absent.

Mayo got off to the worst possible start when their own corner led to the opening goal. They surrendered possession cheaply in the Letterkenny box and Ronan McHugh raced on to the clearance before slotting past Matthew Fox.

The visitors looked nervous during the opening half and another defensive lapse left them 2-0 down after 17 minutes. Luke Parkes was allowed to finish at the back post from a move Mayo could, and should, have dealt with.

Mayo did create opportunities before the break. Seán McAteer, Aiden Coyle and Ben Edeh all got into good positions but failed to finish, leaving Letterkenny with a comfortable advantage at half-time.

The visitors to Letterkenny dominated possession after the restart but struggled to do anything with it. Rovers dropped behind the ball, protected their lead, and invited Mayo to find a way through.

Mayo couldn’t, though. Their passing was below its usual standard and despite having most of the ball, they failed to create a clear chance in the second half. O’Neill persisted with the original approach even though it was producing little, while Letterkenny remained comfortable and organised.

The absence of McCarthy became increasingly obvious. Mayo lacked a player capable of providing the composure and finishing touch required in the final third.

Letterkenny Rovers completed the scoring in stoppage time. Mayo’s defenders stopped when the assistant referee raised his flag but the referee overruled the decision and allowed play to continue. Shane McNamee took advantage and finished well to make it 3-0.
