Mayo man helping shape Ireland’s energy future
A Westport native, who is playing a role in building Ireland’s energy future, has been appointed director, group financial controller at EirGrid, operator and developer of the national electricity grid.
Prior to this appointment, Liam Moran was head of financial reporting at EirGrid.
As Ireland accelerates its transition to a cleaner, more sustainable energy system, Liam is among those helping to shape a future where secure, sustainable and affordable electricity powers homes, businesses and communities across the country.
Liam began his career with KPMG after graduating from the University of Galway with a Bachelor of Commerce degree. A chartered accountant and chartered tax adviser, he has built extensive finance experience with organisations including Ryanair, Cadence Design Systems and Barclaycard.
Liam joined EirGrid in 2021 as head of financial reporting and, following a number of years leading the group's financial reporting activities and contributing to key finance initiatives, was recently promoted to group financial controller.
Speaking of his appointment, Liam said: “The work we do here in EirGrid isn’t just about keeping the lights on, it’s also crucial in supporting regional economies and communities, like those here in Mayo, to thrive. I'm very proud to play a part in that, which is why I'm delighted to have been appointed to this new role.”
This announcement comes as EirGrid recently launched its Group Strategy 2026, setting out an ambitious roadmap to transform Ireland’s electricity grid for a future where every home business and community is powered by secure, clean and affordable electricity.
The strategy outlines how EirGrid will deliver the most extensive programme of work ever undertaken on Ireland’s electricity system, to transform the economy and society through electrification.
Following an allocation of €18.9 billion by Government and the regulator, for investment in the electricity grid and network, EirGrid will deliver an ambitious programme of work over the strategy period to 2030, with a clear focus on building grid infrastructure at pace and at scale.
One of the key enablers to deliver the new strategy which Liam will be working on is ‘Financial Strength for Long-term Delivery.’ This reflects the fact that delivering Ireland’s energy future requires sustained investment over decades, and that a strong and credible financial position enables EirGrid to secure regulatory funding, attract sustainable finance and commit to major infrastructure programmes.
Commenting on the delivery of EirGrid’s new strategy, Liam said: "I'm delighted to take up this new position in EirGrid at such a pivotal time as we deliver our new five-year strategy.
“It is a privilege to play a role in supporting the investment and transformation needed to meet Ireland's future electricity needs. A strong financial foundation is essential to delivering that ambition, and I look forward to helping ensure EirGrid continues to invest responsibly, deliver value for money for consumers and support a secure, sustainable and affordable energy future."
