Mayo LGFA: Burrishoole show class by sinking Westport
THE Mayo LGFA senior championship produced one of the stories of the year so far as two-time champions Westport were sent crashing out at the semi-final stage by neighbours Burrishoole.
Playing at home, Westport were expected to see off the Newport-based team but that's not how things transpired in west Mayo.
Burrishoole were two points to the good at half-time, leading 0-8 to 0-6, but Westport appeared to have taken control with two goals early in the second half, giving them a 2-7 to 0-9 advantage.
However, Burrishoole – champions in 2022 – were not unduly rocked by the concession of those goals and managed to find the net themselves over the closing stages.
For the remainder of the game, in fact, they outscored Westport by 1-3 to 0-1, securing a famous 1-12 to 2-8 victory and a place in the final against Knockmore, who defeated Kilmovee Shamrocks in the other semi-final on Sunday (see report).
Meanwhile, Castlebar Mitchels have been demoted to intermediate following their 1-8 to 2-10 loss to Hollymount in the senior relegation final.
In the intermediate championship, Aghamore and Moy Davitts will meet in this year's decider following victories over Carnacon and MacHale Rovers respectively.
Swinford Killasser survived to fight intermediate another year with a 3-14 to 3-12 win over Louisburgh, condemning the west Mayo team to junior next year.
Either Kilmoremoy or Breaffy will replace Louisburgh as they won their junior A semi-finals.
Kilmoremoy defeated Balla by 3-7 to 2-6 in their semi-final while Breaffy beat neighbours Parke by a solitary score, 0-13 to 0-12, in their last four encounter.
The Neale won handsomely against St. Brigid's in the junior A relegation final to preserve their status for another year.
Finally, the junior B final will be contested by Kilmaine and Kiltane after their semi-final victories over Westport B and Kiltimagh respectively, while Castlebar Mitchels B and Clarmeorris B will face each other in the junior C final after accounting for Achill and Shrule/Glencorrib at the weekend.
