Mayo Men's Sheds commended on outstanding contribution to community

There has been concern and uncertainty among Men's Shed members in Mayo in recent days regarding future funding.

Now Deputy Keira Keogh has moved to reassure the men involved in sheds across the county that she is engaging on this issue and will continue to advocate strongly on their behalf.

The Westport-based representative outlined: "Men's Sheds are one of the greatest community success stories in Ireland. They provide a welcoming space where people can come together, share skills, build friendships and support one another.

"The dedication, generosity and community spirit shown by members is remarkable. Whether it is tackling loneliness and social isolation, supporting mental wellbeing, preserving traditional skills, undertaking local projects or helping charities and community groups, Men's Sheds make an enormous contribution to the lives of individuals and to the wider community

"Since being elected, I have worked closely with Men's Sheds across Mayo and seen first-hand the positive impact they have on individuals, families and communities.

"Earlier this year, I was delighted to welcome members of Westport and Louisburgh Men's Sheds to Leinster House and hear more about the important work they continue to do locally.

"I understand why recent reports have caused concern among Men's Shed members.

"My understanding is that some of this concern stems from discussions between the Department and the Irish Men's Shed Association around both future funding and how funding is administered.

"The department has indicated that a significant portion of funding allocated in recent years was not fully drawn down or spent, leading to discussions about how grants can be distributed more effectively in the future.

"Importantly, there has been no announcement that funding for Men's Sheds is being cut. Rather, there is ongoing engagement about ensuring funding reaches local sheds in the most straightforward and efficient way possible.

"This is something I know local sheds would welcome. When I met members of both Westport Men's Shed and Louisburgh Men's Shed locally, one of the key issues they raised was the cumbersome and administrative nature of the current application process.

"These organisations are run by volunteers, and it is important that they can focus their time and energy on supporting members, delivering projects and strengthening their communities rather than navigating unnecessary bureaucracy.

"Any efforts to simplify the process while protecting funding for local sheds should be welcomed.

"While funding programmes are always subject to the annual budget process, I believe it is important to stress that no decision has been made to cut funding for Men's Sheds.

"Both Minister Dara Calleary and Minister Jerry Buttimer have publicly acknowledged the importance of the Men's Shed movement and have made clear that continuing to invest in local sheds remains a priority and I understand Minister Calleary will be meeting with IMSA tomorrow (Tuesday).

"I want the members of all the Men's Sheds across Mayo to know that their work is valued, appreciated and recognised.

"I will continue to work closely with them and to make the case for the support they need to continue delivering such an important service."
