Moy Solar opens new town-centre Mayo office as demand for solar grows

Ballina-based solar energy company Moy Solar has opened the doors of its new office on Bachelors Walk, giving homeowners and businesses a place in the heart of the town where they can call in and speak directly to the team about solar energy.

The new office marks another step forward for the family-owned company, which has doubled its team during 2026, expanded its operations into Sligo, and is growing its sales team to keep pace with continued growth in demand across the west and northwest.

Founders Shane and Brian Walkin, both from Ballina, have grown Moy Solar with the simple aim of making renewable energy accessible and convenient for homes and businesses across the region. A big part of that is being a trusted source of information for anyone weighing up solar, somewhere people can ask their questions, understand their options and take their time over the decision.

The opening gives people another way to start that conversation. Anyone who enquires with Moy Solar is offered a free home visit, where one of the company’s solar energy consultants looks at the house and tailors the system to suit before any quotation is given, and that does not change.

What the office adds is a permanent base in the heart of the town, somewhere people weighing up solar can call in, put a face to the name and know the company will still be here long after the panels are on the roof.

Shane Walkin, co-founder and managing director of Moy Solar, said: “We’re from Ballina, we employ locally and we’ve always wanted Moy Solar to feel like a local company people can actually talk to.

“Solar is a big decision for a household. You’re putting a system on the roof over your family’s head and wiring it into the mains of the house, so it’s only right that people take their time and ask plenty of questions before they choose who does it.

“Having the office here means people can simply call in, ask their questions and get straight answers. The grant, the payment schedule, how the system actually works, all of that can be confusing at the start, and our job is to take the confusion out of it.”

The expansion comes during a period of rapid growth for solar energy in Ireland. More than 102,000 Irish homes have been grant-aided for solar since the SEAI scheme launched in 2018, and about eight in 10 of those went up in the last three years.

Mayo was one of only five counties to pass 1,000 grant-aided installations in 2025.

For Shane and Brian, that national growth is increasingly visible closer to home, with Moy Solar vans now a familiar sight travelling to installations across Mayo, Sligo and neighbouring counties. After a volatile year for energy prices, the company says the conversation with customers has changed. Saving money still matters, but more and more people want the independence of generating their own electricity, and in some cases producing more than they use and selling the surplus back to the grid.

Shane added: “2026 has been a really positive year for us. We’ve doubled the team, we’re installing in more homes and businesses across the region and we’re adding to our sales team so we can look after everyone who’s getting in touch.

“The thing that means most to us is that our biggest source of new customers is people who were referred by someone we’ve already installed for. That only happens when the installation team and the team in the office are looking after people well, and we’re very lucky to have both.

“Opening the office on Bachelors Walk is something we’re very proud of, but none of it happens without people trusting us with their homes, and we don’t take that lightly. We want to grow at a pace that meets the demand without ever letting the customer experience slip, because that’s the bit that matters most. We’re building the company here, creating local employment and we want to be a real part of the community, contributing in our own small way to the continued growth of the town.”

Moy Solar installs solar PV systems for homes and businesses and handles as much of the process as possible on the customer’s behalf, from the initial site assessment and system design through to installation, the SEAI grant paperwork and a clear payment schedule. For the handful of steps a homeowner has to complete themselves, the team provides step-by-step instructions and takes it from there.

The company also runs a referral programme for existing customers, and its growing number of five-star reviews is something the founders put down to the people doing the work.

While solar technology is becoming an increasingly familiar sight on rooftops across Ireland, the company believes having knowledgeable people available locally is particularly important as more households explore ways to generate their own electricity and reduce their reliance on electricity purchased from the grid.

The new office also reflects Moy Solar’s focus on keeping that relationship local as the company grows.
