Government signs acquisition order for long-range military radars

The Government has confirmed it has signed an acquisition order with France for the delivery of long-range military radars.

The radars were acquired under the Military Radar Programme, with Minister Helen McEntee securing approval for the first part of the Final Business Case in July.

This resulted in the Department of Defence signing an Acquisition Order with the French Ministry for the Armed Forces, allowing the delivery of five deployable long-range radar systems, beginning next year; full capability will be in place by the end of 2028.

The Commission on the Defence Forces had identified the development of a primary radar capability as an immediate priority, and the Government say that this is to ensure the country can have a ‘Recognised Air Picture’.

Minister for Defence, Helen McEntee said: “I am committed to providing our Defence Forces with the equipment they need to ensure the safety and security of our state. Today is a further significant milestone in terms of delivery of the Military Radar Programme, which was a key recommendation made by the Commission on the Defence Forces.

“Today’s announcement means we remain on track to deliver a complete Recognised Air Picture of Irish airspace by the end of 2028, which will very significantly enhance Ireland’s ability to protect our skies.”
