Policy to address safety at pedestrian and courtesy crossings in Mayo being prepared

WORK has started on formulating a policy on pedestrian and courtesy crossings in Mayo.

Safety at crossings has been on the minds of public representatives in the county, and cathaoirleach of the council's roads committee, Councillor Annie Mae Reape, has stressed the need for a policy.

Her personal preference is for raised crossings, as they are safest, a point Councillor Damien Ryan agreed with, saying they create greater awareness.

Director of services David Mellett told a meeting of the committee there is a lot of guidelines and legislation to be considered, and workshops will take place in the municipal districts about the implications.

Following that it is hoped to have a draft policy for discussion when the committee next meet.
