McCarthy star of the show as Mayo FC down TU Dublin to go top of table

A goal in either half gave Mayo a well-deserved 2-0 win in Blanchardstown against a TU Dublin side that were simply overwhelmed by the aggression of the visitors.

Connor McCarthy was the star of the show for Mayo.

He scored the first just before half time when Mayo goalkeeper Aaron Boyle booted long and the bounce deceived the TU defence, for McCarthy to finish well, and send Mayo in a goal to the good at the break.

TU were a bit better in the second half but the Mayo defence of Gugga Kokaia, Noe Baba, Daire O’Connor and Darragh Forde were excellent throughout, and midfielders Gary Armstrong and James McGrath sitting in front, made it almost impossible for TU to get through.

And then, with ten minutes of normal time remaining, McCarthy put substitute Ben Edeh through to seal the win, with a fine strike.

The win puts Mayo top of the group and sets up a tasty clash with rivals Salthill Devon on Saturday next at Umbro Park, Milebush, Castlebar.
