Westport United claim Mayo Super League crown for first time since 2017

Castlebar Celtic’s hopes of securing a fourth successive Super League title ended at United Park when Westport United came from behind to win 3-1 against the Hoops and claim their first championship since 2017.

Celtic had made a promising start to their title decider, weathering Westport’s early pressure before Johnny Cocozza put them ahead after 24 minutes.

The defending champions gradually established themselves and took their narrow advantage into the half-time break.

However, the game changed dramatically immediately after the restart when Oran Murphy received a straight red card, leaving Celtic facing the difficult task of defending their lead and title, on a big pitch with ten men.

Westport made their numerical advantage count on the hour when Noah Massey headed home from a corner.

Twelve minutes later, Alex Halpin produced a superb strike from outside the penalty area to put the home side ahead.

Celtic had little left to offer in response, with the demands of playing half the match a man short taking its toll.

Experienced United striker Darren Browne added Westport’s third in the final minute to settle the contest.

It was a disappointing end to Celtic’s title defence after three successive championships, but Westport were deserved winners on the day.
