Mayo facing double weather warning

MAYO is facing a day of increasingly unsettled weather tomorrow, with Met Éireann issuing two Status Yellow warnings for the county as strong winds and heavy rain move in from the Atlantic.

Wednesday will begin largely dry but cloudy, with fresh to strong and gusty southerly winds developing throughout the morning.

Winds will be particularly strong in exposed coastal areas, where gale-force conditions are possible.

A Status Yellow wind warning will be in effect for Mayo, Galway and Donegal from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Met Éireann has warned that the strong southwesterly winds could result in displaced debris and loose objects, difficult driving and cycling conditions, and some fallen trees and branches.

Large coastal waves, combined with a moderate surge, could also lead to wave overtopping in exposed coastal areas.

While much of the morning and early afternoon should remain dry, cloud will thicken as the day progresses, with persistent and heavy rain moving into the west later in the afternoon and evening.

Temperatures in Mayo are expected to reach around 14 to 16 degrees.

Conditions will deteriorate further during the evening, with a separate Status Yellow rain warning coming into effect at 6 p.m. for Mayo, Galway, Donegal, Leitrim and Sligo.

The warning will remain in place until 6 a.m. on Thursday, October 15, with spells of heavy rain bringing the potential for localised flooding, poor visibility and difficult travelling conditions.

Wednesday night will remain wet and blustery, with heavy rain continuing across western and northern counties before spreading eastwards on Thursday morning.

Motorists are advised to exercise caution, particularly along exposed coastal routes and in areas prone to flooding.
