Minister Dillon welcomes sod turning for Pro Rail Academy in Mayo

Minister of State Alan Dillon has welcomed the sod turning of the new Pro Rail Academy in Kiltimagh, describing the project as a major investment in skills, regional development and the future of Ireland's transport infrastructure.

The academy will provide specialist training for the next generation of railway professionals, helping address critical skills shortages across the rail sector while creating new employment and education opportunities in Mayo and the west of Ireland.

Speaking at the sod turning event, Minister Dillon said: “Today is an important day for Kiltimagh, for Mayo and for the future of Ireland's rail infrastructure. This project is about creating opportunities, developing skills and ensuring that more young people can build successful careers close to home.”

The academy will deliver training across key railway disciplines including signalling, electrification, telecommunications, railway civils, surveying, permanent way and project management, and supporting the workforce needs of major infrastructure projects planned under the National Development Plan.

Minister Dillon praised the vision and commitment of Pro Rail Academy founders Eamonn and Siobhan Maloney in bringing the project to life. “Eamonn and Siobhan identified a real industry challenge and responded with an ambitious solution. Their investment in Kiltimagh will help build a pipeline of skilled workers for Ireland's rail sector while delivering lasting economic benefits for Mayo and the wider region.”

The Minister also highlighted the importance of developing domestic talent to meet future workforce needs. "As Government continues to invest in major infrastructure projects, we must ensure we have the skilled workforce required to deliver them. Pro Rail Academy will play an important role in developing that talent pipeline and strengthening Ireland's long-term competitiveness.”

The project will also include an Innovation and Research & Development Hub, helping position Kiltimagh as a centre of excellence for railway engineering and workforce development.
