Award-winning Mayo gospel choir perform at Sagrada Família in Barcelona

Castlebar’s award-winning Chapel Street Gospel Choir has taken its musical talents beyond the borders of Mayo, embarking on a memorable trip to Spain that combined outstanding musical opportunities with friendship, travel and a shared passion for gospel music.

Under the direction of Kathy Fahey, the choir has established a strong reputation for its outstanding performances and uplifting gospel harmonies.

Its recent Spanish adventure provided an opportunity to showcase its talent in remarkable surroundings, bringing a little piece of Mayo to an international audience.

A particular highlight was the choir’s performance at the magnificent Sagrada Família in Barcelona, one of the world’s most celebrated architectural landmarks.

Performing in such an iconic setting proved to be a memorable occasion for the singers, who were delighted by the reception they received.

Reflecting on the choir’s progress and the Spanish experience, director Kathy Fahey said: “The group continues to go from strength to strength and the sold out crowd in the Sagrada Familia really enjoyed the experience.”

The choir also travelled to Calella, the beautiful seaside town on Spain’s Mediterranean coast, where members enjoyed another opportunity to share their music and experience the warmth and atmosphere of this vibrant destination.

The choir’s continued success reflects the dedication and enthusiasm of its members, alongside the leadership and musical direction of Kathy Fahey.

For Castlebar and the wider Mayo community, the choir’s journey is a source of pride and a reminder of the talent and community spirit that flourish throughout the county.

Attention will now turn to one of the highlights of the choir’s annual calendar: its ever-popular Christmas concerts.

Chapel Street Gospel Choir will perform two concerts at Christchurch on the Mall in Castlebar on Sunday, December 20, at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.

The concerts have become a much-anticipated fixture in the local Christmas calendar, with performances usually selling out as audiences gather to enjoy the choir’s distinctive gospel sound and festive atmosphere.

Tickets are available through Eventbrite, and those hoping to attend are encouraged to book early to avoid disappointment.
